Terms of use
The Migale Bioinformatics facility proposes different types of services and resources to its users:
- Access to computing and storage resources
- Access to training modules, tutorials, and user support
- Access to informatics and bioinformatics development service
- Access to data analysis service
A complete description of the different services is available and updated on our website.
A catalog of the different services and pricing is available on this page.
This document aims to define the term of usage and the user’s responsibilities for all the services provided by Migale.
Migale is not certified for “Health data Hosting” (Hébergeurs de Données de Santé (HDS) ). Hosting and treatment of health data is regulated under French law by the French Public Health Code (Article L.1111-8), which stipulates that any healthcare organization—hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, laboratories—that handles personal medical data must use a service provider that is HDS-certified.
Migale can not be used to store and analyze sensitive data such as medical or personal data.
Access to services
Access condition
Account creation
Anyone working with life sciences data can request an account. The form is available on the platform website.
The account application is subject to the following conditions:
- A brief explanation justifying the application: thematic, analysis objective, and resources needed
- Acceptance by the Migale team
- Acceptance of the present charter and the Charte Informatique INRAE (in french)
- Possession of an institutional (academic or private) e-mail address (no Gmail, Yahoo, or disposable e-mail provider).
- For non-permanent staff, communicate the name of the person in charge, the start and end dates of your employment contract.
Accounts are strictly personal. Sharing your account with another person will expose you to an immediate account closure.
Account validity
- For permanent positions, accounts are created without expiration dates.
- For temporary contracts, accounts are created with a validity corresponding to the contract duration declared on the Account creation form.
All accounts are subject to the following closing conditions:
- Date of the end of the contract for a non-permanent position
- Inactive account: no connection to our resources (Cluster, Galaxy, Rstudio, Web,…) for one year.
- Inactive e-mail
- Failure to comply with this charter or the INRAE Computer Charter
- At the request of the user
In case of a change of situation (renewal of contract, change of employer, position, e-mail…), users are obliged to inform the Migale team. Depending on the situation, accounts will be prolonged, or another account should be requested.
No data access will be provided by the Migale team to other people than their proprietary before or after account closure. In the case of temporary accounts (contractual, trainees), it is the contract worker’s and their manager’s joint responsibility to anticipate the end of access to the data.
Usage quota, supplementary resources
Depending on their status, users can access a quota of resources, as defined in our catalog of services. Extended resources may be granted upon request and subject to a fee.
Data storage and backup
Cluster, Rstudio
Users have access to three types of storage: home,
save,
work.
All those spaces are stored on a centralized Hybrid Storage System with redundancy that can absorb component failures (disk, controller).
- The
work
space has no backup. Deleted files in this space can not be recovered. home
andsave
spaces have regular snapshots. A snapshot is a logical copy of volume data captured at a particular point in time. Like a restore point, snapshot images allow you to roll back to a known good data set. Those volumes are, by default, snapshotted every day with a period of retention of 7 days. See this page for more details.
Galaxy, Web services
Data for web services are stored on the same centralized Hybrid Storage System used for Clusters and present the same level of data security. No snapshot system is provided for those services. It’s the user’s responsibility to manage their data properly.
No distant backup of the user’s data is performed. Migale is not meant for data backup or archiving. It is the users’ responsibility to perform periodic backups of their data.
Migale shall take no responsability for data loss.
Data access and sharing
By default, storage created on Migale is private. It is the user’s responsibility to check for the rights associated with their data (chown
command on Linux, Data management on Galaxy). Migale shall not take responsibility for unintentional data sharing.
Migale can support users’ willingness to share or publish data following FAIR principles (training, personal support).
The system administrator can access your data for user support, debugging, and monitoring. Migale administrator will never share your data with other people.
Migale commitments
Migale has been ISO9001 certified since 2011, demonstrating our commitment to the quality of our customer relations and to the continuous improvement of our services. You can contact us by different means to report any difficulties, questions, or suggestions for improvement:
- Message to the Migale team:help-migale@inrae.fr
- Message to the CSU, which represents Migale users
- End-of-project or training satisfaction survey
- Annual satisfaction survey, usually at the end of the year
The team does its best to respond to requests in a timely manner. However, due to the size of our team, the number of users, and the complexity of certain requests, we cannot commit to specific deadlines. We anticipate maintenance interruptions as far as possible and notify users via our preferred channels:
- mailing list
- website
- newsletter
It is the user’s responsibility to consult these communication channels regularly to be informed of service interruptions.
User commitments
Users of Migale infrastructure commit to:
- respect the present charter and the Charte Informatique INRAE (in french)
- respect the license of the tools and data provided (including in Galaxy), notably if they have exclusion for commercial use
- follow recommendations about password policy security best practices of INRAE and Migale
- solely use Migale infrastructure for projects in relation to Life Science thematics
- do not analyze or store personal data or health data regarding GDPR on Migale infrastructure
- be aware that Migale is a shared infrastructure that needs to regulate user usage
- cite Migale in all work permitted by the usage of the infrastructure (See Results property and citation)
Results property and citation
Results obtained using Migale’s computing and storage resources are the sole property of the user, who is responsible for the analysis and archival processes. Results obtained using Migaleés development or analysis service are a joint property between the Migale team and the user.
Research teams that have used Migale services are expected to thank the Migale bioinformatics facility in the publications of their analyses with the following sentence:
“We are grateful to the INRAE MIGALE bioinformatics facility (MIGALE, INRAE, 2020. Migale Bioinformatics Facility, doi: 10.15454/1.5572390655343293E12) for providing help and/or computing and/or storage resources”
